One key point: if you can get over the natural gag reflex of seeing hundreds of rodents swarming over a restaurant kitchen, you will be free to enjoy the glory of Ratatouille, a delectable Pixar hit. Our hero is Remy, a French rat (voiced by Patton Oswalt) with a cultivated palate, who rises from his humble beginnings to become head chef at a Paris restaurant. How this happens is the stuff of Pixar magic, that ineffable blend of headlong comedy, seamless technology, and wonder (in the latter department, this movies views of nighttime Paris are on a par with French cinema at its most lyrical). Director Brad Bird (The Incredibles) doesnt quite keep all his spinning plates in the air, but the gags are great and the animation amazingly expressive--Remys shrugs and nods are nimbler than many flesh-and-blood actors can manage. Refreshingly, the movies characters arent celebrity-reliant, with the most recognizable voice coming from Peter OTooles snide food critic. (This fellow provides the films sole sour note--an oddly pointed slap at critics, those craven souls who have done nothing but rave about Pixars movies over the years.) Brad Birds style is more quick-hit and less resonant than the approach of Pixar honcho John Lasseter, but its hard to complain about a movie that cooks up such bountiful pleasure. --Robert Horton

Ratatouille is a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining movie. It does engage in French stereotypes (I have lived there) but the proof of its entertainment value is how highly it was accepted in France. Its a simple story, but one that is fun to watch unfold.

We ordered two of these for Thanksgiving. One arrived dented and then is took them three weeks and more than 20 phone calls and four attempts to get them to collect and replace it. (They did not tell Fedex they needed two shipping slips for the two boxes it comes in - we got to know our Fedex man pretty well though) When the second one finally arrived the day before we left for xmas vacation, it would not ignite. And as we were not able to return home to open it and discover this for another two weeks, we were not able to make their 1 week deadline to report a faulty product. The one that works, is great. The company is completely unfocussed on its customers and has serious issues with accountability.
Please dont bother to deal with them.

When looking for a Patio Heater, we were told that Endless Summer was the best. We found the best price on Amazon.com. It arrived in a couple of days. The directions were easy to follow in putting it together. We are enjoying spending evenings outside on our pation with our new heater!
With average rivals, this unit might be the best this industry has to offer
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :4
We could not find a compelling case to buy any patio heater model from any company at any price due to the very average ratings and highly variable reviews. It wasnt until we read a comment from another brand/model where the owners talked about their unit tipping over and getting damaged. We then had a new critical criteria to look for: weight.

    Pro:
-Weighs in at 96 pounds (shipping weight, no tank), almost 2x heavier than the lightest model we saw, 25 pounds heavier than the next best
-Took only about an hour to assemble (note: you only have to do it once)
    -Large and nice looking
    -Stainless steel body
-Hardware very cleverly packaged and labeled (thank you!)
-Includes allen wrench for tightening the set screws
-Throws heat well, 40,000 BTU (I cook steak on my gas grill which is 25,000 BTU)
-Variable temperature via the burner knob
-Electronic igniter (comes with one AA battery)

    Con:
-Additional tools not listed are needed (13mm wrench, level and/or t-square)
-Assembly requires very level surface, would have been good to know before I started assembly
-Some dents and bent parts (brackets) that required some creativity to fix
-The mysterious clip orientation needed in Step 2 is not properly shown until Step 10
-Does not come with the wheels, must be purchased separately
-One of the six set screws was loose in the packaging... almost lost/thrown away
    -Made in China
    -Price

    Neutral:
-A cover is available, but sold separately
-Tools used/needed: philips screwdriver, 7/16" crescent, 7/16" socket, 9/16" crescent, 9/16" socket, 13mm crescent, pliers (to straighten bent elements), four 16" long 2"x4" pieces of wood (see tip #1 and #2 below), allen wrench (included), step stool (see tip #3)
-Tip #1: Avoid laying unit on its side... instructions say to do this several times. I used wood to improve access to the bottom screws in steps 1 and 2 by raising the unit up off the floor to avoid laying on its side in these steps.
-Tip #2: I used the wood again to hold up the "shroud cover" so that I could manage attaching the gas line quick disconnect in Step #8, and also in Step #10 to give me access to tightening the gas clip that secures the gas line (clip keeps line from rattling)
-Tip #3: Step #9 says to lay the unit on its side... no way! I used a step stool to access the nut caps that attach and secure the top shroud/dome.
-Tip #4: Back out the 6 set screws some before you begin Step #7 (trust me)
-Tip #5: Run for the first time in a well ventilated area to burn off any material stuck to the unit

Bottom line: Recommended, however mainly on looks and weight and considering the weak competition.

    Chinatown (Special Collectors Edition)

    Description

Landmark movie in the film noir tradition, Roman Polanskis Chinatown stands as a true screen classic. Jack Nicholson is private eye Jake Gittes, living off the murky moral climate of sunbaked, pre-war Southern California. Hired by a beautiful socialite (Faye Dunaway) to investigate her husbands extra-marital affair, Gittes is swept into a maelstrom of double dealings and deadly deceits, uncovering a web of personal and political scandals that come crashing together for one, unforgettable night in...Chinatown. Co-starring film legend John Huston and featuring an Academy Award-winning script by Robert Towne, Chinatown captures a lost era in a masterfully woven movie that remains a timeless gem.

    Amazon.com essential video

Roman Polanskis brooding film noir exposes the darkest side of the land of sunshine, the Los Angeles of the 1930s, where power is the only currency--and the only real thing worth buying. Jack Nicholson is J.J. Gittes, a private eye in the Chandler mold, who during a routine straying-spouse investigation finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into a jigsaw puzzle of clues and corruption. The glamorous Evelyn Mulwray (a dazzling Faye Dunaway) and her titanic father, Noah Cross (John Huston), are at the black-hole center of this tale of treachery, incest, and political bribery. The crackling, hard-bitten script by Robert Towne won a well-deserved Oscar, and the muted color cinematography makes the goings-on seem both bleak and impossibly vibrant. Polanski himself has a brief, memorable cameo as the thug who tangles with Nicholsons nose. One of the greatest, most completely satisfying crime films of all time. --Anne Hurley

Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
This film is a masterpiece because it is nothing but what we expect and we expect something different at every single moment of it, so that we are disappointed and surprised and held breathless every fifteen minutes when one of our expectations goes down the chute. At first we think it is one more private eyes business or investigation in some kind of affair with some married man. But it does not fit at all with the professional dedication of the suspected unfaithful man. He is obviously looking for something fishy in the water supply of Los Angeles he is responsible for. But then he does meet with a girl, doesnt he after all. And yet there is something fishy in that water supply. So it might be a big embezzlement case. Let Los Angeles pay for the water they will never get and then let Los Angeles get to the water where it will be, and let them pay again. The point is it does not explain everything, and especially why the thieving contractor is so keen on getting the hooker his son in law was seeing. Too keen to be honest. Is she a hooker after all? And we go on doubting, hoping, being disappointed and never getting to the truth of the business. Who the killer really is? Who the police really work for? Who the police tries to protect and cover? Why do the police do that unprofessional act? There is just no good enough answer, and even at the end, when the tycoon contracting embezzler gets the last word we know we are off the point and losing all footing in too deep water. Thats probably the best part of this film. You just have to accept the situation the way it is and do nothing just because some people are big enough, rich enough or powerful enough to do exactly what they want and everyone else has only one choice, die or say yes-sir-mister-master-sir-boss. Even killing his own child is not a no-go option for such a greedy person. Remember, change we can, but change these tycoons cannot. So better change them than expect them to change. Why not send them on a perpetual vacation in some desert island that has absolutely no connection with the outside world, But dummy, thats just the point, such a place does not exist. So better put them to death, put them to sleep or deep freeze them if you dont want to deep fry them, which stinks a little bit. But any other way will let them go on with their shaggy and dirty business. But gosh it reaps a lot of profit in. Look at Madoff.

Great Noir But Too Bad About the DVD!
Rating Point :2 Helpful Point :0
"Chinatown" represents an updating of the great noir films of the past such as "Double Indemnity" and especially of "Maltese Falcon" which happens to be together with "Sunset Boulevard" my favourite representatives of the genre although "Chinatown" more closely resembles the "Maltese Falcon". Nicholson parallels Bogart here and Dunaway does Astor and ironically John Huston, the director of the "Maltese Falcon" has an acting role here.

"Chinatown" does a great job in bringing the noir genre into the colour-age and does so very well by incorporating the best of the old black and white films into the more modern film making elements of the time. This film has gone on to influence even more modern films like "The Black Dahlia" and "L.A. Confidential" and its theme of corrupt police and their evil rich backers who get away with anything with an excellent plot and great acting by Dunaway, Huston and Nicholson make this a great film to watch.

The only problem is with the very poor picture quality which really should have been restored although they did a pretty good job with the sound quality which has been a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround option. The picture quality have a number of imperfections such as white spots and barely reaches VHS quality. As Roman Polanski is still alive the last I checked, they really should try and do a Directors Cut version with restored and remastered picture and sound quality before its too late.

Id recommend giving this dvd version of the movie a miss at least until they come up with a much better restored version preferably together with a Directors Cut either on standard or Blu-ray formats.

Rating Point :3 Helpful Point :0
Chinatown is a unique film in many ways and is considered a classic. It is generally deemed to be a film noir but i have to admit I had a little trouble seeing it. Many of the plot elements fit the film noir genre but visually it was a little harder for me to see. I enjoyed watching the film but the ending changed my opinion a bit. First of all, the plot and dialogue was very intelligent and I really like that about it. Im not surprised that script won an academy award it certainly deserved it. The casting was also very good. Nicholson and Dunaway had a unusual but strong chemistry and the supported cast helped build a believable world around them. Again, as far as considering it a film noir, much of the film didnt feel like one. It had the fairly typical detective plot but so much of the film was shot in bright, outdoor scenes. My major problem with the film was the ending. In a largely objective way, it was okay. I did fit certain themes of the film and brought an odd sort of closure to the plot. But personally, it was too disappointing for me. I just have trouble enjoying a story that ends too negatively. In the end, i think Chinatown was a very intelligent movie that kept my attention but i cant say that i want to watch it many more times.

CHINATOWN is, to state the obvious, one of the great Hollywood classics, featuring fabulous dialogue, a sensational story, incredible acting from Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway ( at the top of their game ), and stiletto-sharp direction from Roman Polanski. This is the kind of dark, steamy, pot-boiler that defined noir, and very few films have ever done it as well- and none better.

This is an excellent product with great sound, and a sharp transfer. There are also plenty of extras. An absolute must for Nicholson, or noir fans.

This stirring 1994 work by Louis Malle brought the legendary French filmmaker into another collaboration with actors-writers-directors Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn, scribes and stars of the great My Dinner with Andre. The situation here is that Shawn and Gregory were participants in a years-long, informal project remounting a production of Chekhovs Uncle Vanya every few months for select friends and the general worthiness of the idea. Wearing street clothes and strolling to a crumbling New Amsterdam theater on Broadway, actors Shawn, Julianne Moore, George Gaynes, Brooke Smith, Larry Pine, Phoebe Brand, Lynn Cohen, and others would do a full run of the text (as sharply translated by David Mamet) while a beaming Gregory (the plays director) looked on. Malle--who died following this film--spent a few days transforming the theatrical experiment into a viable film that maintained the companys unusual purpose and spirit. The result is something between a narrative feature and a documentary about an acting workshop, and is both highly entertaining and cinematically enthralling. A terrific final note in Malles distinguished career, this is a must-see for anyone who cared about his work or who has a passion for Chekhov. --Tom Keogh

This is how Chekhov was meant to be performed! The setting is bleak, dark, heavy, honest, and so are the performances - but the stand out is clearly Brooke Smith. Her portrayal of Sonya is raw and lyrical, and it lit a small fire in my heart that burned brighter as the film progressed. She literally glows in the flame that she kindled. Something in her makes my emotions dance to whatever song her face and eyes are singing, and I was left groaning and sighing with inexplicable ache and hope.

This is what theatre and cinema are meant to be. I want to be transported outside of myself in order to recognize my deepest places reflected back at me through a character. Brooke Smith shows me the deep places that exist in all of us, even if were too bound up to reveal them to each other.

Buy, buy, buy Vanya on 42nd Street! And then take a deep breath, surrender to the truth and beauty of Chekov, the universal ache and loneliness of Brooke Smith as Sonya, and come to the understanding that we are most alive when our heart aches for that which we can never have.
Louis Malles swan song: Uncle Vanya on 42nd Street.
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
Vanya on 42nd Street is a 1994 film collaboration between French director Louis Malle and actors-writers-directors Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn. The three had previously worked together on the must-see 1981 film, My Dinner with Andre. This film was the last of Malles career. (He died of lymphoma following filming.) The engaging film features a cast of actors including Shawn, Julianne Moore, George Gaynes, Brooke Smith, Larry Pine, Phoebe Brand, and Lynn Cohen, who rehearse in their street clothes for a performance of Chekhovs major play Uncle Vanya (as translated by David Mamet) in the rat-infested, 1903 New Amsterdam theater on NYCs 42nd Street, while Gregory supervises the workshop rehearsals. Their performance of Chekhovs tragicomedy about "the wasted life" is intended for an invitation-only audience. This film will appeal to anyone with an interest in Checkov. His popular play has also been adapted into three equally hard-to-find films on DVD: Dyadya Vanya, Sam Neills Country Life, and Sir Anthony Hopkins August.

a beautiful film that showcases ensemble work on the stage......
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
VANYA ON 42ND STREET was my introduction to director Louis Malles body of work. This 1994 film was the last film Malle completed before he passed away, and it is a great tribute to his talent for storytelling, as well as a great vehicle for his very talented cast. Basically, the film takes place on a stage, where the cast (including Julianne Moore and George Gaynes) is doing a read thru of Anton Chekhovs UNCLE VANYA. Together, they capture the dismal reality that Chekhovs characters live in, and its very engrossing. The actors are very engaging. This is another one of those films that doesnt rely on excessiveness. Minimalism is a great, underutilized quality in films, in this day and age. I really think that the understated direction and wonderful collective atmosphere sustained throughout the duration of the piece is beautiful. Definitely give this one a go!

Magnificent? May be it can be a word to define it. A bunch of great actors get together around a worn table in a decrepit and abandoned theater. They start a play. They are all dressed as you or me would be. They have no make-up. But they have themselves.

And in minutes they capture you they inmerse you in the Chekhovs world. They show you art in its more elevated sense.

This is Vanya on 42nd Steet.

Pared down, offbeat approach to rendering of Chekhov may inflame purists, but actually makes the playwrights dark, depressing work more accessible. We get the full treatment, with no flubbed lines or distractions to break the dramatic tension of the piece. And though Shawn and Moore may not be ideal casting, they turn in holding performances which transport us to that bleak, far-away time in rural Russia. A daring and intelligent piece of work from the late Malle, which takes us behind the velvet curtain to view at close quarters the practice and discipline of acting.
